The Mercabolsa Project
A beautiful place, San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, but just outside the deluxe hotels and resorts, care of the natural environment is a work in progress, often in its early stages. Progress is seen in the attempt to recycle plastic, but Media Architects ventures to support a plastic bag replacement program to create less need for plastic production altogether. The Mercabolsa project is underway and we'll be looking for useful ways to raise awareness and funds to have natural cotton bags produced to give away to native Nicaraguans.
Though hours away by plane from our New England, we experience the consequences of the world's environmental practices. Plastic bags in Nicaragua, and throughout the developing world, are only occasionally used as trash liners or reused some way. Most end up in trees, bushes, waterways, and perhaps worse: they are often burned with the rest of the trash along the road and in backyards. The Earth suffers from these practices. You and I have a stake in the environmental problems of the developing Americas. We want to do something to help.
